Employment Opportunity: Director of Development & Communications at Teen Feed

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: Founded in 1987, Teen Feed works with the community to offer support to meet basic needs, build strong relationships, and ally with homeless youth as they meet their future off the streets. With the tremendous support of the community, Teen Feed responds to the most basic needs of homeless youth with three programs: Teen Feed, Street Talk Outreach Program (STOP), and Service Links for Youth (SLY).
CURRENT CONTEXT: Teen Feed is positioning itself for the next 25 years of rich growth as an agency addressing the most basic needs of homeless youth and young adults. We have recently approved a five-year strategic direction, a process that included interviews with over 50 community stakeholders and input from over 25 youth. We have strengthened our leadership, invested in the development of our staff team, and implemented a precise focus on our mission at all levels. The current team is passionate and ready to move forward with an unprecedented program expansion. The Director of Development & Communications will be part of the leadership team that will strategically guide these efforts.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Development & Communications works closely with the Executive Director and contract grantwriting team. Together with the Executive Director, the Director of Development & Communications is responsible for achieving revenue goals for Teen Feed and for conceptualizing and implementing communication and marketing strategies. Fundraising activities include: establishing a five year development plan, launching a major gift initiative, ongoing donor stewardship, grant management, special event management, direct mail appeals, workplace giving, corporate giving, and planned gifts. Marketing and communications activities include: expanding message and brand management, print publications, on-line communications, marketing/publicity, and special projects.
Hours: Full-time, salaried. (Evenings and weekends as needed)
Salary Range: $55,200 – $60,000 DOE
Reports To: Executive Director

FUNDRAISING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Establish and lead the five-year development plan for the organization in ongoing alignment with Teen Feed’s strategic direction.
• Oversee all fundraising activities related to the cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement and ongoing stewardship of individual, corporate and foundation donors, including entering and managing gifts via Teen Feed’s Salesforce database.
• Plan and implement strategies to retain and attract new major donors at the $500, $1,000 and greater levels.
• Coordinate the Executive Director’s participation in major gifts of $500 and above and other major gifts as needed.
• Execute Teen Feed’s Annual Celebration with key staff and volunteer committee participation, with emphasis around preparation for Teen Feed’s 25th Year Celebration in October of 2012.
• Launch and manage a second annual fundraising event as a complement to the Annual Celebration.
• Manage, with the Executive Director, Teen Feed’s grantwriting efforts and assist the grantwriting team with proposals and reports.
• Participate in face-to-face solicitations with individual, corporate and foundation donors.
• Facilitate the board’s participation in cultivating, soliciting and acknowledging major donors.
• Oversee the ongoing research and identification of new prospective donors.
• Oversee the creation of brochures, correspondence, stewardship materials, acknowledgement letters and other materials necessary for relevant campaigns.
• Create and implement compelling donor recognition strategies including additional opportunities for face-to-face interaction with current and prospective donors while not compromising youth confidentiality.
• Develop a market for and manage an emerging planned giving program.
• Provide or arrange for training to staff, volunteers, and board as necessary.
• Monitor and make recommendations for increased performance and efficiency of workplace giving to Teen Feed.
PLANNING & ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
• Work in tandem with the Executive Director on implementing five-year strategic plan.
• Create and monitor an annual development and communications budget in alignment with the strategic plan.
• Act as the key board liaison for development and marketing/communications activities.
• Ensure the professionalism and integrity of all development related activities for the organization.
• Stay abreast of development trends locally, regionally and nationally to ensure maximum performance on all contributed income campaigns.
COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING
• Launch and implement five-year communications plan for the organization.
• Oversee the hiring of contractors for communications efforts.
• Direct the communications activities of Teen Feed, including publications, public relations and media relations.
• Ensure that Teen Feed has a strong and consistent mission-focused identity and message.
• Initiate innovative outreach, collaborative and marketing efforts involving Teen Feed volunteers and youth where appropriate.
• Represent the organization at events and speaking opportunities as needed and involve Teen Feed staff team and volunteers (major donor functions, receptions, community events, etc.).
• Create and organize donor education opportunities.
• Serve as the lead staff to communications/marketing committees or task forces as they arise.

MANAGEMENT
• Supervise the development activities assigned to members of the direct service staff team when applicable, particularly around fundraising events and time-limited campaigns.
• Oversee the management and recognition of agency volunteers related to fundraising as needed.
• Serve as a member of the senior staff management team with the Executive Director.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
• A minimum of 3 years experience in non-profit development and communications, or transferable experience in the corporate arena.
• A proven track record of success in solicitations of individual gifts of $500 and above.
• A proven track record of managing 250+ person fundraising events.
• Demonstrated knowledge of broad-based fundraising campaigns including: major gifts, direct mail, planned gifts, special events, corporate and foundation gifts.
• Proven communications and online media skills, as well as the ability to positively motivate team members.
• Demonstrated long-term planning and team management skills.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Experience with Word, Excel, and Salesforce or comparable database.
• Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and diplomacy skills.
• Can see the big picture and pay attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in an open office environment with frequent distractions and negotiation around group space.
• A great sense of humor and ability to be creative.
• A demonstrated commitment to social justice and ability to see all fundraising activities and organizational development critically through this lens.
• Passion for the futures of homeless young people and ability to treat youth with dignity and respect.
• Commitment to supporting Teen Feed in growing to the next level.
SPECIALTY SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED
• Broad knowledge of Seattle/Northwest community.
• Professional experience in working with homeless and/or at risk youth and/or demonstrated knowledge of these issues strongly encouraged.
• Candidates who bring life experience relatable to the youth we serve.
• Experience with and comfort using Salesfoce for donor management and stewardship.
